Gener8
Product design, UX/UI design
Download app
Gener8 is an app and browser that allows it’s users to take control and be rewarded for sharing their data. I started doing freelance work for Gener8 right before they were featured on BBC’s Dragon’s Den in 2020. They received funding and have evolved from a browser extension, then a browser, and released their app in 2022. I have done work on and off during this journey, but they were my sole client between 2022-2024.
Google in the background case study

Problem:
After users signed into Google and approved data sharing, the Gener8 app required them to remain within the app to complete the transfer and earn points. This constraint led to a high bounce rate, as users often dropped off during the waiting period. We needed a solution that allowed the transfer to continue in the background while keeping users engaged.
Technical solution:
Our iOS and Android developers enabled the data transfer to proceed even if users navigated away from the app, giving users more flexibility without interrupting the process.
Design solution:
  • Introduced a persistent progress bar anchored to the menu, allowing users to track progress at a glance and tap for more details.
  • Updated the design on the loading page with clear messaging on transfer status and estimated completion time to manage user expectations.
  • Added a call-to-action on the loading page, prompting users to start another connection and earn additional points, keeping them engaged while they waited.
Outcome:
These changes led to a reduction in bounce rate and an increase in successful data transfers. Completion rates improved post-launch, indicating a measurable impact on user engagement and retention.
Tiered reward system

USER INTERVIEWS
Role:
Product Designer
Problem:
Users were connecting only a few data streams, resulting in low engagement and limited platform value.
Process:
We began with in-depth competitor research to understand how users typically interact with tiered systems and what design patterns they find intuitive. Past user interviews highlighted that our audience is highly reward-driven but often confused by unclear instructions. With that in mind, I explored several design flows to communicate the tier structure more effectively. The process was highly iterative, the Product Manager requested multiple concepts, and I refined the designs over several rounds based on internal feedback and usability considerations.
Requirements:
Users needed to:
  • Instantly identify their current tier
  • Understand the steps required to reach the next tier
  • Clearly grasp how the entire tier system works
Solution:
I designed a tiered rewards system that gamified data sharing. It encouraged users to connect additional data sources by offering progressively better rewards at each tier.
Improved Referral Program

UX RESEARCH
Role:
Product Designer
Problem:
The existing referral system only offered points as a reward, which wasn’t compelling enough to drive meaningful user growth through referrals.
Process:
Gener8 had access to a selection of vouchers for gifts, such as free drinks, which we identified as a stronger motivator than points alone. After conducting competitor research and revisiting insights from past user interviews, we designed a streamlined referral flow. The new approach focused on simplicity: making it easy for users to share their unique code via a QR code or prominent share button. We also introduced a new section within the Settings screen that clearly showed referral progress, when a friend joined, and when the user’s reward was unlocked.
Requirements:
  • Make referring a friend fast and effortless (QR code or large share button)
  • Design a referral tracking page within Settings to show status and reward eligibility
Solution:
I redesigned the referral experience to offer tangible, real-world rewards alongside existing points. The new interface made sharing intuitive and added transparency to the referral process.
